"The Americana"
Always on the lookout for good art models to teach in my Fundamentals of Art classes, I let my own desire and interest inspire me. In giving a lesson on drawing machines, namely a boat, I needed a real object. I recall when I was a child, drawing a row boat following along steps in a book. Didn’t think much of my accomplishment. So as a teacher, and an artist, I try to draw from life. Not living next to the ocean or harbor or where boats are, the next best thing would be to get a model.
Found this beautiful handcrafted, floatable sailboat online. Starting out showing how to use basic shapes, drew "The Americana" first in charcoal. When the image looked proportionally correct, I traced the outline onto 18” x 12” 140# watercolor paper. Stuck to red, white and blue color scheme, with a little earth tone.
This watercolor was entered in Hemet Valley Art Association Special themed category. No awards were won.
