I saw a TV documentary about a female elephant calf who had a difficult time in life, even with knowledgeable and dedicated people caring for her . There was a poignant magazine article also, about another baby elephant . Even though pachyderms are the largest land mammal and are very strong, the young are still so vulnerable.

     The calves are so cute and have so much personality.  This was a subject I undertook in one of my drawing classes, to teach how to draw animals and how to use a grid to achieve accurate results.  The fuzzy hair on the top of the head and the eyes really made this little guy cute.
