"Ocotillo"
This desert scene is inspired by our family trips across the California/Arizona desert. I love the Ocotillo cactus, especially when it is in bloom. The bushes with yellow flowers represent Brittlebush, a sage-type plant native to California desert.
I used to draw and paint pictures of the desert when I was growing up. On the advice of a much-admired local artist, who said to paint what excites me, I decided to go back to the kinds of subjects that I used to do.
This 11" x 14" acrylic hung in my house in the 1990x. When our house went up for sale and the paitning came down, I reworked the canvas board, using the knowledge and skills gained since the original painting.
Indeed, the changes made proved to this painting made a better composition, worthy of second place in Hemet Valley Art Association's Bronze category in June, 2019.
