  • "Fire In the Sky"

"Fire In the Sky" is a 16" x 20" acrylic on canvas.  The idea came first, before "Full Moon Over La Cresta".  I had taken my dogs out for our daily afternoon trip to the mail box.  The weather had been kind of cool, with moisture in the air, the typical "June Gloom" in California.  So the clouds that night were wispy.

After we collected the mail and headed back up the cul d sac we lived on out in the country, the view became incredibly dramatic.  The moon was big and round and orange, a very beautiful harvest moon.  The sky glowed orange around the moon, hence the name.

In order to preserve the scene, I hurried back to the house.  On the way my mind is planning:  "My film camera doesn't have the right film for night shots, the digital camera batteries are always dead, I will get my cell phone."  I shoved the dogs into their dog run, quickly grabbed my sketch book and some colored pencils and ran down the road again.

I stood there in the middle of the street, sketching the beautiful sky before me, capturing color, shapes of clouds and that amazing moon.

The photo I took with my cell phone was after the color had faded, so it turned out as a white orb in the middle of dark trees.   I painted "Full Moon Over La Cresta" first, as a trial run for the composition and colors.  Since it turned out pretty good, I couldn't wait to get started on the larger, more colorful version.

I used Prussian Blue in the sky and for the clouds.  Cadmium  Yellow and Alizarin Crimson combined to create the complimentary orange.

I painted this in February of 2013 under the tutelage of Rich Stergulz.  It was framed and entered in the art show held at Pinnel Gallery in Fallbrook, CA, for Rich's students.

I did some repainting, in September 2013.  The moon looked much better, after repainting.  This composition turned out over-all the way I wanted it to.
