"Jasper"
I used my dog Sam as one of my animal models in my art class. The drawing of my big, black, sweet Labrador mix has hung in the hallway in our house for some time.
I also used a photo of Jasper, a Terrier mix, as a model. For the first class, I taught how to use the grid in reproducing his image, I achieved a very good likeness in the line drawing on the grid.
The next week's class on shading, however was not turning out the way I wanted. Other students I was teaching that method to, also used Jasper as a subject. I demonstrated how to get to the point that I was at, with the drawing I already had. Several people in the class did an excellent job of portraying Jasper, as he is, cute and alert.
Not being satisfied with my work, and after seeing how one particular person added tone and value, and how she described how she felt about the model, I discarded what I had and started over, retracing the line drawing and applying tone and shading. I completed my drawing to my great satisfaction. The thought I kept in mind was how to make my pencil strokes reflect Jasper's personality.
