Put together from several photographs, Koi served as subject for my Paint Parry October, 2019.  In an experiment for a commissioned work, I used an aqua board, which has a slick surface.  Subject for the client's painting involved lots of straight lines, hard edges and crisp brushwork. Aqua board seemed a good choice, but discarded the idea because it turned out to be too slick and easily damaged.

     I started with a yellow ochre under painting, then applied cerulean blue with burnt umber for the water.  Koi fish come in orange, yellow, black, red, gray, white and sometimes blue.  I followed the actual colors of the fish in the photographs.  To represent fish under water, I drizzled gloss medium randomly over the surface.  I am pleased with the way this composition looks.

To top it off, I had the perfect frame; gold molding in bamboo design with beige linen inset.
