"Poinsettia"
"Poinsettia is a 12" x 9" oil pastel on paper. While I was finishing up a painting, our landscaper Ken Rice, brought us a poinsettia plant, which is one of my favorite flowers. I had already decided to paint a poinsettia for our Christmas cards. I had already started, using what I remembered a plant in the grocery store looked like. Having the subject right in front of me made the task so much easier. I drew the composition and in order to check out the colors and values that I wanted to use, I colored a full-scale version in oil pastels.
My original idea was to use chalk pastels and make the picture soft and glow-y. I liked how it came out so much that I decided to use the trial run as my artwork for my Christmas cards. The complimentary colors of red and green in oil pastels had a rough, almost mosaic look.
The production of the cards didn't take place until the next year, as my art was not ready in time for that Christmas. In the meantime, the poinsettia plant died, but at least I have its image.
