  • "Black-eyed Susans 2"

These cheery, bright yellow flowers with the dark centers are among my favorites.  They are in the sunflower family.  Where we used to live there was a field covered with these.  When we moved, I planted Black-eyed Susans.  They are used frequently in my drawing and painting classes.

While I was working on this color version, I focused on the flower furthest away from me.  Towards the end of the class, I noticed that the aspect had changed and I seemed to be looking at it from a slightly different point of view.  Where I sat hadn't changed and no one had moved the arrangement, but the center of the flower was definitely harder to see, as it was tipped away from me.

Then I realized the Susan was following the spot-light illuminating the set-up!  Even as a cut flower, the chemicals in the stem made it turn towards the light, as it would outdoors in the sun.
